HOW CHILDREN LEARN

Learning through exploring

Children this age learn by playing, exploring and being active, indoors and outdoors. Each day mixes structured activities with free-choice play, stories, number and letter games, and even cooking and IT.

Through play they develop their English, make friends, learn to share and solve problems, and get used to listening and following instructions in a group.

CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING

Three ways children learn

The EYFS describes how young children learn best. We plan every day around these three characteristics.

Children playing with a parachute

Playing and exploring

Children find out by trying things for themselves.

A teacher with a pupil

Active learning

They keep going, concentrate and enjoy what they achieve.

Children building in the sand tray

Creating and thinking critically

They have their own ideas and find new ways to do things.

STARTING SCHOOL

How to prepare your child

Starting Pre-Reception is a big step. A little preparation at home makes the first weeks much easier.

Using the toilet

Children should be out of nappies and able to use the bathroom on their own. Please pack a change of clothes, just in case.

Eating independently

Children feed themselves at snack and lunch time. Staff help with opening lunchboxes and packaging.

A steady routine

Regular bedtimes at home help, as the school day can feel long at first.
